Meyers

Death For Sale

Sally Witherspoon Mystery, #3

by

Erik S. Meyers

Someone is killing off the elderly citizens of Berry Springs!

Death for Sale is the third novel in Erik S. Meyers Arkansas-set Sally Witherspoon Mystery series, featuring the owner of the local bike bar who gets swept up into the investigation of the deaths of some well-loved, elderly figures in her small town. As the holidays approach, the residents of Berry Springs, Arkansas, prepare for their annual Thanksgiving dinner held at the local hotel, but the following day sees several attendees at the hospital suffering the symptoms of what appears to be food poisoning. Two older members of the community are hit particularly hard, and Belle, the long-time diner waitress, succumbs to the effects, while the other, Mama Arnold, the town's matriarch, struggles along but survives. However, she is not so lucky later, after hosting her exclusive holiday party in her own home. With Sally and local restaurateur, Joanna, briefly viewed as suspects, Sally jumps in to investigate as yet another death occurs.

Sally is her same irascible self, fully confident she can uncover the killer before local law enforcement; however, this time, the local cop shop is in full agreement. With little to go on, they eventually embrace Sally as an additional investigatory weapon in their crime-fighting arsenal. She receives the town's full support as she gathers opinions and observations from everyone she knows while trying to find answers.

The story is well-paced as Berry Springs experiences Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's with a killer on the loose. As the massive list of possible suspects slowly narrows, readers are introduced to many characters who appeared in the prior books. The biker bar, Sally's Smashers, is a fun setting. Although a little outside the town limits, it still attracts a good number of the regular folk and feels like a home away from home for many.

While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, and the author provides ample explanations worked into remembrances and conversations of what has transpired in the past. Sometimes, however, these mentions became a bit repetitive, even for readers who hadn't read the previous books, while the development of recurring characters received only cursory attention. Still, the plot firmly held my attention, and I was surprised and satisfied by the final resolution.

I recommend DEATH FOR SALE to cozy mystery readers.

Laszlo

Rübezahl

by

M. Laszlo

A fantasy tale that horrifies, recreates, and satirizes modern realities.

Rübezahl by M. Laszlo is a vividly portrayed fantasy that not only recreates but satirizes modern realities as it entertains and prompts further consideration. Whether a reader chooses this story for fantasy, philosophical elements, or the political comparisons, there is much for everyone to enjoy.

Waltraud, an incomparably beautiful girl on the cusp of womanhood, seems to be the only one who can hear the tormented cries of the winged man Rübezahl. However, they have a shocking history together, and although he begs for release from his prison, she knows that to do so would mean the destruction of her city and all she knows. So, in revenge, Rübezahl curses the city with rain that causes the residents to suffer hallucinations and a lax depression, opening the door to unscrupulous and opportunistic politicians to come in and take over.

The authors storytelling is mesmerizing with vivid details and an absolutely unique plot. There were surprising twists throughout that kept me completely off balance and unable to set the book down or look away from what was happening. I particularly liked his choice of time period for the storys setting, the late 1800s, when society was much more strait-laced, closeted, and inhibited, offering a greater contrast to the lifestyle and tragic past of Waltraud, the main character. She suffered at the hands of Rübezahl as a child, yet still has sympathy for her former captor. I was shocked by his ability to slip in and out of her mind and body at will, and how he experienced her most intimate and private moments. What a horrifying concept! This tale is a keeper Ill read again later and discover new elements.

I recommend RÜBEZAHL to readers of fantasy.

by

Ashley-Ruth Bernier

Mystery and murder infused with island vibes, food, and tea!

The Bush Tea Murder is the first book in author Ashley-Ruth Berniers new Caribbean Island Mystery series, and after reading it, I felt as if Id been on an island vacation. The story, told in the present time and flashbacks, resolves several mysteries and tackles a local murder that has gone unsolved for many years.

Naomi Sinclair, a former investigative reporter who is now a kitchen show television host on EAT-TV out of Charlotte, North Carolina, is competing with a colleague to host a new true culinary crimes show and has a year to produce a sample episode that will determine who gets the hosting spot. Naomi, having grown up on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, chooses to investigate a cold case from her hometown, involving people she knows: a successful local teashop owner, Ursula Merchant, murdered in her shop, and several friends and family members of the dead woman. Traveling between Charlotte and St. Thomas, Naomi delves into the circumstances of the case while confronting personal issues: her ailing father and her deepening feelings for the man she left behind.

I enjoyed this series debut quite a bit, with its engaging characters and interesting, unusual storylines. Naomi comes across as relatable and realistic, a woman who would be fun to know, and she was easy to root for and follow. She faces common problems in her work situation, worries about her aging father, and changing feelings for Mateo, who has his own struggles. I enjoyed her investigation and keen observations, which helped her resolve other mysteries that came her way while she was visiting her hometown, friends, and family.

The authors storytelling drew me in from page one. Not only was Naomi likable, but I became invested in what she was going through immediately and wanted her to succeed. As this is the first book in the series, it introduces many characters, reveals backstories, and establishes relationships. However, the author does this so organically that I had no trouble keeping everyone straight and getting familiar with the close-knit community on St. Thomas.

The plot was well-paced, with no dull moments. I liked the premise that Naomi was recounting the events of the previous year to her bosses and colleagues, which allowed for present-day action and flashbacks. While the present day had a very corporate feel, her time back home was full of cozy island vibes, with food and drink at every turn, including the local bush tea that reminded her of home no matter her location. The vivid descriptions of the places Naomi visits while building her show really brought the setting to life.

I recommend THE BUSH TEA MURDER to readers of mysteries and suspense.

by

Audrey Steidl

A living nightmare of control and manipulation in a high school setting!

To Die For is a new young adult psychological drama by Audrey Steidl that captures many realistic moments and attitudes of high school society and survival, especially after a narcissistic personality enters the mix. When Mika St. John catches the eye of Delilah Fields, it is the first day of a new semester at a new school for her, but she is determined to get her man no matter what.

The story is well-paced as the author builds a setting familiar to most of us and introduces a diverse cast of characters. Dei, as Delilah is known, could be the poster child for a narcissistic personality, as she manipulates her way to what she wants. I was fascinated and horrified in equal measure by the depth of planning involved in her campaign to secure her hearts desires, as well as by her full awareness of what she was deliberately setting up. The regular high school students didnt stand a chance. The whole tale is chilling and made for an unputdownable page-turner.

I recommend TO DIE FOR to readers of young adult fiction and psychological drama.

by Raven Howell

Illustrated by Joe Rocco

An eye-catching, attention-grabbing, and useful introduction to words as a tool and an object of power or fun.

Word Up! by Raven Howell, illustrated by Joe Rocco, is an eye-catching, attention-grabbing way to teach the very young that words have power and can adapt to all circumstances, even if that means remaining unused. Sometimes its the sound of a word itself that draws someone to its existence. Maybe its the way it slides over the lips or pops off the tongue or bursts from the mouth, without regard for meaning, that draws ones attention and affection. Or, perhaps, its the sound of its pronunciation that obscures or hides the unpleasant meaning of a more common synonym that brings some love its way. Still, its fun to discover what words another person holds dear to their heart and why. The books whimsical delivery and vibrant illustrations help young readers see that words can be powerful tools, both helpful and hurtful, and that they should be recognized for their abilities and value.

I recommend WORD UP! to young readers and listeners at home, school, or in afterschool settings.

Searching Out the Devil

by Bradford Bennett

An old-school senior officer who misses the street action retires and opens his own private investigation office.

Edwin Steelside: Searching Out the Devil by Bradford Bennett is a collection of short stories featuring the former head of detectives turned private eye. This volume includes four intriguing and mysterious cases for the new PI to solve.

Ed Steelside is an engaging protagonist for the series. Divorced after his job as the head of Vancouver PDs Homicide Detectives Bureau kept him away from home and his wife too much, hes considering getting back in the dating game to get to know Molly, a smart, fast-talking, and saucy waitress at his favorite coffee shop. He retired from the police department when, after climbing the ladder, he discovered that most of his time was spent on administrative tasks rather than solving crimes and pursuing justice for victims. Instead, hes opened his own private investigation office, and his stellar reputation is starting to attract some big cases.

Each story is a self-contained case, and Ed conducts a thorough investigation, following clues and his instincts. The police procedural style employed puts the reader alongside Ed every step of the way as he puzzles through the information he uncovers, leading to the final resolution. Suspects come and go as the clues either rule them out or put them on a fast track to arrest by his former colleagues, with whom he maintains a positive, mutually beneficial relationship.

I recommend EDWIN STEELSIDE: SEARCHING OUT THE DEVIL to mystery readers who enjoy their police procedurals in bite-sized chunks.

Tragic, shocking tale that made me question my emotions.

Daughter of Mine is a new womens fiction tale by Angie Stanton that made me question my own emotions and perceptions. A woman who lost her newborn hours after her birth takes the healthy infant of another. The story is gut-wrenching and heartbreaking, but rather than straightforward emotions, the lines blurred between where my sympathies took hold.

The authors writing style is compelling and drew me into the fearful story immediately; the pages melted away as I followed the unfolding lives of two mothers, Melissa and Cheryl, and baby Greta, who became known as Piper. I read this book in one absorbing sitting.

I recommend DAUGHTER OF MINE to readers of womens, crime, and literary fiction.

An unexpected joy!

The Purpose of Getting Lost: A Story of Finding Myself, a memoir by Tracy Smith, was an unexpected joy to read as I connected with and related to so many of her experiences, impressions, and emotions. Approaching 50 and an impending empty nest, the author comes to realize the person shes become, or, rather, presents to the public and even family and friends, has drifted far from the real self shed slowly buried in time and by the necessity of successive needs of others.

Wives and mothers adapt as needed to provide what is essential to those who depend on them, but in doing so, often lose contact with their own needs, desires, and feelings. Through travel and new experiences away from the life and persona shed constructed, the author gradually peels off the hold the needs of others had on her and allows the real Tracy to re-emerge. Reading Tracys words felt like a comfortable yet deep conversation with that one friend who really gets me.

I recommend THE PURPOSE OF GETTING LOST to readers of womens memoirs and travelogues.

The openings craziness and chaos made this an unputdownable debut!

Dead Focused and Hocus Pocused is the first book in veteran author Marcy Blesys new Empty Nest Mystical Cozy Mystery series and features retired elementary school teacher and newly-minted empty nester, Julianna Juli Tully, as she checks in for a weeks stay to help ease her past her feelings of uncertainty over her new phase of life. Craziness and chaos greet her at the Sand Bur Estate on the shores of Lake Michigan, the location of the Empty Nest Retreat: Where You Take the Front Seat of Your Life Again, which was gifted to her by her mother and husband, and is not the spa-like scenario that shed been hoping for at all. Soon after her arrival, a staff member turns up dead, and as Juli was the last person to see them alive, she becomes the number one suspect in their murder.

Juli is such a relatable main character as she confronts the bewilderment that greets her upon arrival. Shes confused and turned off by the weird vibes she gets from the start, and feels singled out as the staff seems to focus solely on her during their sessions. The first person she meets there is Nelle, a high-energy sort, eager to please, participate, and support anything healing, but not exactly a relaxing individual to be paired with. Several of the other attendees were downright hostile to Julis presence, and when the chef is found dead, the tension really mounts.

However, things at the Sand Bur are not what they seem, and Juli decides to stick it out to uncover the strange goings-on and, later, clear her name of the murder. While I wanted to rescue Juli myself from the sheer chaos at first, it was the quirkiness of the situation that begged for explanation that hooked me. The author tells a compelling story with relatable characters, and I just had to find out how everything would resolve.

I recommend DEAD FOCUSED AND HOCUS POCUSED to cozy mystery readers who enjoy paranormal and supernatural elements in their stories.

This series just keeps getting better!

Hunted by Proxy is the second book in author Manning Wolfes excellent Proxy Legal Thriller series, featuring the hiding-in-plain-sight criminal defense attorney Quinton Bell, and what a fabulous follow-up to its debut it is! From its heart-wrenching opening to its dazzling surprise of a conclusion, I was riveted by this exciting and absorbing story.

Quinton Bell is a complex character, to say the least. Living a lie to escape his past, hes endured a lot and is feeling the stress of maintaining his masquerade as a dead man. The author gets us right inside Quintons head, and you can almost feel the pressure hes under, especially with the knowledge that someone out there knows his secret and is using it to toy with him. His legal work is fascinating to read, even the requisite administrative hearings, and the author clearly knows her way around a courtroom and how to convey that to the layperson reader.

Soon into the story, it is revealed that someone knows who Quinton Bell really is, and naturally, hes spooked. But as days passed and things began to happen, such as the odd sightings of people that quickly disappeared, I, too, started to get the willies. When Quinton said he felt like he was being watched, I knew exactly how he felt. The reader is privy to the thoughts and actions of this stalker but not who is pulling his strings, and when that big reveal happened, I was fully and completely surprised. The story sets up for a next book, and I, for one, am already waiting.

I have to mention the opening sequence, a massive traffic accident on the I-10 between Houston and Katy, was horrifyingly real a slow-motion rendering of certain death, critical injuries, and destruction. The author gives the perfect introduction to the main characters involved, so I was immediately engaged and already cared about these people when the scene unfolded.

I recommend HUNTED BY PROXY to mystery and thriller readers who enjoy legal dramas, secret identities, and mob-related stories.

Blue Water Mysteries, #1

by

Lyn Farrell

Who could possibly want the young mother of a three-year-old dead?

In the Dead of Winter is the first novel in author Lyn Farrells new Michigan-set series, the Blue Water Mysteries, and pairs the investigative talents of a sharp-witted civilian sheriffs dispatcher with the untested but earnest undersheriff, investigating his first homicide. Victoria Treadwell was making her way to work over treacherous snow-covered rural roads when she saw a car come up behind her, fishtail, and slide off the road and stop headfirst against a tree. When she turned back to see if the driver needed help, she discovered a young woman, barely breathing and crumpled over the steering wheel, as her toddler daughter witnessed everything from her car seat in the back. As the young woman succumbs, it becomes apparent that her death was not the result of the accident but of the premeditated actions of a murderer.

Victoria, the married mother of two, is a talented amateur sleuth, hampered by her status as an untrained civilian. Shes quick to see connections in the clues, and her online research skills really help further the investigation. She takes a personal interest in the case and hopes she and her part First Nations husband can adopt the dead womans tiny daughter, a First Nations child, out from under the girls own father and grandmother, neither of whom may be in the best situation to care for the toddler.

Undersheriff Pete Manstead, while a dedicated officer, is the tortoise to Victorias hare in their race to bring in the killer before the sheriff, who is out of town at a conference, returns to take over the investigation. A self-acknowledged plodder, Pete thinks and rethinks his every move. Still, he tends to leap to some pretty tenuous conclusions as he works to identify the killer. Together, the result is quite a unique police procedural with several potential suspects, all of whom look good for the murder until their alibis prove theyre not the one. Slowly but surely, the two tease out the truth of Carly Yellowstones sad death.

I recommend IN THE DEAD OF WINTER to readers of mysteries, especially those who enjoy a story set in blizzard-like conditions or Michigans rural north.

Kiska

Cat and Mouse

Parker City Mystery, #6

by

Justin M. Kiska

Another compelling dual timeline tale of mystery and suspense.

Cat and Mouse is the sixth entry in author Justin M. Kiskas excellent historical and comradely Parker City Mystery series, and this time Detectives Winters and Mason are faced with a cold case of stalking from the Christmas of 1965 that kept the women of Parker City on edge and looking over their shoulders the entire holiday season. The most wonderful time of that year was marred when numerous women, seemingly selected at random, received a creepy, typewritten note in the mail, claiming they were being watched and to Be careful. However, the note Elizabeth Blakely, a young administrative secretary at the towns largest department store, received varied significantly from the others; hers was personalized, handwritten in angry red, and delivered by hand to her home rather than sent through the postal service. Her targeting was much more personal and was followed up with even more taunting missives. Still, the police had little to go on, and the case gradually languished in storage until Elizabeth, 20 years later and married, moved back home to Parker City, and the letter writer took up their pen again.

It was great fun to be reunited with Ben and Tommy as they reworked this old case with new eyes and fresh ideas. Ben is soon to wed Natalie, and Tommy may have found someone special in Christine. It was nice to see Tommy has grown in maturity and taken note of how Ben handles himself in investigations since he first joined him as a detective. While they still banter like old friends tend to do, theyve really upped their game in working together as a team, too. I liked that Ben still considered Natalie as a valuable point of view on his cases.

The story hits the ground running as Ben and Tommy foil an unusual crime in progress, as the entire downtown of Parker City celebrates its rebuilding from a devastating flood with a well-received summer street festival. But the plot soon reverts to the winter of 1965 when the stalker roamed those same streets, targeting random women with threatening notes. The recounting of what Elizabeth Blakely experienced kept me on the edge of my seat, and the descriptions of her work life as a secretary in 1965 were a surprising trip down Memory Lane and a reminder that some things have changed for the better while others have stayed the same. The author gives readers a couple of possible suspects to consider, along with some good plot twists that keep things exciting. I think this may be my new favorite of the series.

I recommend CAT AND MOUSE to readers of mysteries and suspense.

Severin

Deadly Vision

by

T.D. Severin

High-stakes medical miracles come to life, while political manipulations set out to destroy them.

Deadly Vision is a new medical-political thriller by T.D. Severin and is the realistic story of high-stakes medical miracles come to life versus the political manipulations determined to destroy them, all the while asking, Has mans understanding of medical interventions outstripped our capacity to afford them? Young Dr. Taylor Abrahms and his research partners, Malcolm Bernard and Helen Wang, may have created the next breakthrough in medicine with their Virtual Heart Project, but powerful individuals with ties to the upcoming Presidential election will stop at nothing to shut it down.

Wow! From its shocking opening to its unsettling second epilogue, I was completely absorbed by this story. The characters are realistic, some are likable and engaging, while others are menacing, others are afraid of the future, and others are willing to go to great lengths to maintain the status quo. Taylor Abrahms has given his all during his grueling double residency, reaching for a future inspired by tragic childhood losses, and his struggles are intensified by someone who should be in his corner. Malcolm Bernard, his genius of a partner, is no less intense, but his quirks provide some fun relief; in fact, he is a delight.

The action hits the ground running, with a frightening assassination attempt against a good guy who has uncovered something he was never meant to find. There are roadblocks, twists, and turns all along the way, and much happens in the shadows, secretively, and when connections were revealed, I gasped aloud. The characters are cleverly and unexpectedly linked together, making the stakes even more critical. I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for the next shoe to drop.

Dont let the tome-sized package of this story deter you; the authors writing style is engaging, and I was quickly drawn into this complex tale; the pages and the time flew by! I recommend DEADLY VISION to readers of medical thrillers.

Unsettling and twisty psychological domestic thriller.

Everyone Is Perfect Here is a new psychological domestic thriller by author Jane Haseldine, and features unsettling family drama and shocking plot twists that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. USC English professor Carly Bennett has finally gained hold on a satisfactory life after her tragic childhood that culminated with the murder of her mother and police suspicions that she was somehow involved. But when she discovers the body of a campus janitor in her office and the stepbrother who betrayed her all those years ago suddenly reconnects, it seems all her old nightmares are coming back to haunt her or worse.

Carly Bennett was the victim of psychological manipulation as a child and is now facing similar circumstances as an adult, but who exactly is behind it all? Ava Patel is her strong, vibrant, and loyal best friend, doing her darndest to get to the bottom of what's going on, and she's such an exciting element in the story. I'd love to see her appear in another book.

The plot unfolds from multiple points of view, including Carly's flashbacks to her childhood, when she and her mother, Emily, first became part of the White family. I loved how the author sets readers up with clues pointing in one direction while sprinkling clever indicators that perhaps things weren't what they seemed throughout the tale. I was delightfully fooled.

I recommend EVERYONE IS PERFECT HERE to readers of psychological or domestic thrillers.

Exciting plot with twists I never saw coming!

Dead by Proxy is the first book in author Manning Wolfe's new Lawyer on the Run legal thriller series, the Proxy Legal Thrillers. With intense courtroom action and the unexpectedly suspenseful consequences, I was riveted by the story and glued to the pages. After losing a major court case, attorney Quinton Bell finds himself the lethal target of his disappointed client and must flee for his life. He reinvents himself, hiding in plain sight, in Houston, Texas, until another important case puts him in the spotlight and back in the crosshairs of the client he was desperate to avoid.

Attorney Quinton Bell is the engaging, sympathetic main character, pushed to uproot everything when threatened by an unrelenting, disgruntled client. He's smart and easy to root for (as you try to catch your breath, still your heart, and keep up!) I never saw the twists in this book coming. I also enjoyed the setting, particularly as I read it while in Houston, Texas, and staying downtown at the time.

The author's writing style drew me into the tale immediately; easy to read, yes, but compelling and satisfying. I was delighted to see that she has several previous books, and I intend to grab them soon.

I recommend DEAD BY PROXY to readers who enjoy legal thrillers or mysteries and stories set in Houston or Texas.

A delightful spectacle!

Circus Bim Bom is a new historical fiction novel by Cliff Lovette, and while regaling readers with a wonderfully worthy story, it does its darnedest to recreate the magical spectacle of a circus come to town, with all the sights and sounds ushered in through the marvel of QR codes and a well-developed website hosting the extras. Snippets of history dazzle alongside a sparklingly entertaining fictional plot, peopled by engaging and sympathetic main characters. Together, this story will not only grab your attention but also your emotions and your heart.

In an effort to promote the post-Cold War sentiments of peace and goodwill, Moscow sends the newly formed Circus Bim Bom to the U.S. for a two-year tour. With most of its members never having set foot outside the former Soviet Union, their introduction to the privileges and excesses of American life is eye-opening and fraught with temptation and opportunity, despite the buffering effect of state-supplied chaperones and the watchful presence of the KGB. The huge undertaking, guided by a raft of unlikely and ill-prepared local producers and sponsors, faces unexpected, and at times amusing, obstacles as the show must go on!

While the tale runs a bit long with backstory, it is full of interesting background information that absolutely sets the stage for what is to come, and I still found the pages to fly past. The book ends with unanswered questions, ready for answers in the upcoming sequel, but readers can attain some immediate satisfaction by following the provided QR codes to the website for additional material.

I recommend CIRCUS BIM BOM to readers of historical fiction who are looking for something fresh, new, and innovative.

Crying in the Chapel is the fifth book in author Teresa Trents charming, cozy Swinging Sixties Mystery series, featuring career girl Dot Morgan as she and her fiancé, Ben Dalton, head to the altar to make their lives one. However, the happy occasion is almost sidelined when Dot discovers the body of the churchs caretaker after a suspicious fall from the chapels belltower.

I love this series, and it seems to get better with each successive addition! Dot is an independent young woman, building her life and career at a pivotal point in our societys history: the turbulent and transformative 1960s. Traditional womens roles are being challenged right and left, and Dot is facing personal struggles of her own when she realizes Bens parents are very traditional in their views of what their sons married life should look like. Up to this point, Ben has always projected more modern sensibilities; however, in the company of his parents, he initially doesnt rush to support Dot when she expresses her views on their future life together. It really concerns her that he may harbor similar sentiments in secret. I liked how Dots support system, especially her cousin Ellie, immediately encouraged her to discuss her fears with Ben rather than continue to worry or just hope for the best down the line.

An outstanding feature of the series is the 1960s Texas setting, and the author nails the unique look and feel of the time and place with cultural references and vivid descriptions. From the mention of Dean Martins 1960 hit, Aint That a Kick in the Head, to the plethora of linoleum and other typical 60s home décor and design elements, I was sent on a delightful trip down Memory Lane any number of times.

The plot moves quickly as Dots friend and confidante, Officer Mary Oliva, a permanent member of the Camden Police Departments investigative team, is assigned to the case. Theyve successfully collaborated in the past, and this time should be no different. However, someone at Camden Chapel has a very permanent method of dealing with people who stick their noses in other peoples business. The story is full of small-town drama, secrets, twists, and turns.

I recommend CRYING IN THE CHAPEL to readers of historical cozy mysteries.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advance Review Copy from the author through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

BOOK REVIEW: THE PORTAL (BLAME IT ON THE MOON, #3) by Lou Pugliese

The Portal

Blame It On the Moon, #3

by

Lou Pugliese

A young woman is convinced the answer to keeping her friends newborn safe lies where life meets the afterlife.

The Portal is the third book in author Lou Puglieses riveting and original paranormal mystery series, Blame It On the Moon, and puts faith, love, and commitment to the test when Vicki Roadcap discovers the Crafts new baby may be the target of kidnappers. With suspense lurking around every corner, I was loath to set this book down before the final page.

The entire gang from the previous books returns as Robert, Audrey, and friends relax on the water in the final weeks before the birth of their first child. A freak accident, however, lands Vicki Roadcap in the hospital in a medically induced coma as doctors work to save her life.

Spiritually gifted, but not necessarily a religious person, Vicki finds herself floating in a welcoming, light-filled space that exists between life and the afterlife, a place she calls The Portal, where souls can linger as they pass to or from one existence to the other. She discovers she can connect with loved ones from her past as well as the spirit of the victim in a murder investigation she and her friends had assisted with in the previous novel.

These characters, including Lincoln, feel like real people, old friends I enjoy catching up with. I loved that they returned to Pennsylvania to visit Don Weston and Abbey Foster and that they made another attempt to find out what happened to Isabel. The Ouija board séance scenes had my heart in my throat and my stomach in knots with anxiety and anticipation at all times. The author tells an absorbing story, and I really enjoy his ability to craft realistic and witty dialogue.

The plot picks up and resolves the threads of a couple of storylines left over from earlier books, such as the murder of Isabel Helms, and readers finally learn the truth behind the ghostly basketball game that takes place in the wee hours at the old Craft house. However, the focus is on Vicki Roadcap and her desperation to return to The Portal for answers, so readers new to the series should be able to read and enjoy this book as a standalone. (But do yourself a favor and read the previous books in the series.)

The lengths Vicki is willing to go to in order to return to The Portal are shocking, and I was on the edge of my seat as she put her plans into motion, completely invested in what the outcome might be. There were clues along the way as to the identity of the kidnapper, so observant readers may be able to guess the truth behind Baby Elizabeths disappearance. As a mother, I can imagine the agony that Audrey and Richard endured, but my belief in who the perpetrator was and why they did it actually helped talk me off the literary ledge.

I recommend THE PORTAL to readers of paranormal mysteries.

by

Dean Koontz

Narrated by Elizabeth Rodgers and James Anderson Foster

Riveting prequel to the Jane Hawk series from her days as an FBI agent.

The Bone Farm by Dean Koontz is a prequel, of sorts, to his exciting Jane Hawk series and tells of a deadly encounter with a serial killer known as the Mother Hater. Ably narrated by Elizabeth Rodgers and James Anderson Foster, the story unfolds from alternating viewpoints: Janes and the killers. Readers are privy to the killers knowledge and Janes realization of the truth. The story is gritty and violent, and the resolution is suspenseful and action-packed. Readers/listeners do not need to have read the regular series books first to enjoy this novella.

I recommend THE BONE FARM to fans of the Jane Hawk series or those want an introduction or sample of Koontzs wonderful storytelling.

Matt Coyle

No good deed goes unpunished.

Yesterdays Echo by Matt Coyle is the 2014 Anthony Award winner for Best First Novel and the first book in the authors Rick Cahill crime fiction series. The main character (Cahill), a disgraced former Santa Barbara police officer, had relocated to the town he grew up in after being accused, but never charged due to lack of any evidence, of the murder of his wife, Colleen. For the past eight years, hes struggled to put a life together as the manager and part-owner of Muldoons Steakhouse in the La Jolla community of San Diego. However, a couple of good deeds at the restaurant one night put him in the crosshairs of some very powerful people involved in politics, blackmail, and murder.

Rick is a personable guy dealing with a tragic past that began in his childhood. Hes carrying a load of guilt since his wifes murder, and although innocent of her murder, he feels responsible for her death. His father had been fired from the La Jolla Police Department when Rick was a boy and lived under a cloud for the rest of his life, though it appears he, too, was blamed for someone elses actions. Both father and son were judged guilty in the public eye, and there is much yet to be uncovered in both cases in future novels.

I enjoyed Ricks quick wit and wisecracking style, and the novel has a strong crime noir feel.

The plot is complex, with several subplots unfolding throughout, some of which eventually converge in unexpected ways. The story is violent at times, and theres shocking collateral damage that affects Ricks loved ones. Scenes with Colleens father, who is convinced Rick is guilty of his daughters murder, are gut-wrenching, especially as you feel Rick is being truthful that he was not the one.

I recommend YESTERDAYS ECHO to readers of crime fiction.
