Galleria Dallas Celebrates Juneteenth with Local Artist Collaboration

In celebration of Juneteenth, Galleria Dallas is excited to engage the community through a local artist. The shopping center commissioned a T-shirt design from noted textile artist Sam Lao that will be available free of purchase beginning Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 10 a.m., while supplies last. The artist will be onsite from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. to personally distribute the commemorative shirts. Lao is known for creating inviting and engaging installations that invite the viewer to not just look at but touch the artwork. This vibrant style was the result of Lao often being reprimanded in her youth for getting too close to the artwork in museums.

In addition to creating this limited-edition T-shirt, Lao will also present a complimentary art installation as a part of Galleria Dallas’ Artist Collective on Level 1 near Bachendorf’s. Her work will be on display June 9 – July 4.

Lao’s joyful work often utilizes yarn and other fibers.

“Our Juneteenth commemoration has become a signature part of our community relations plan for Galleria Dallas,” said Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Megan Townsend. “Partnering with an amazing artist like Sam Lao is such a rewarding way to get involved in the observation of the Juneteenth holiday in a unique and engaging way.”

Galleria Dallas commissioned artist Sam Lao to create the above shirt, which will be distributed beginning Saturday, June 17.

Lao’s thoughtful design both recognizes the past and celebrates the present and future, with the dates 1865 and 2023 both highlighted. The starburst shape is inspired by the official Juneteenth flag, which was developed in 1997 and revised and adopted in 2000. The center star reflects the Texas flag, while the outer nova shape represents the “Bursting Star of Freedom,” a new beginning for all. Lao hopes the playful, hand-drawn type evokes a sense of joy and freedom.

Juneteenth, which was made a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Texas first heard the news of President Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation – nearly two and a half years after it was signed.

Galleria Dallas sourced locally owned Instant Imprints Plano to print 300 shirts featuring the exclusive design. The shirts will be available for visitors on Level 1 near Bachendorf’s while supplies last. Lao will be on-site to personally distribute shirts from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.
