The Best Books of September 2018

As summer comes to an end and we start to enjoy some slightly cooler weather here in the DFW area, it's time to give your fall reading list a little attention. September was a great month for book releases, so don't hesitate to check out some of these newest additions to the world of literature.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Sadie has spent her life providing for her younger sister and trying to keep their heads above water. When her sister is found dead, Sadie's whole world crumbles, and she becomes determined to unravel the secrets of her killer. A local radio personality named West McCray catches wind of her hunt, and he soon begins a podcast that tracks Sadie's painful journey.

"Summers excels at slowly unspooling both Sadie’s and West’s investigations at a measured, tantalizing pace." - Booklist (Starred review)

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker

In this highly-praised masterpiece, Barker turns to the timeless story of The Illiad for inspiration. Her tale is set in the city of Troy as war is waged over Helen, and she uses her knowledge of war and history to cultivate a complex story of mythology and admirable female characters. If you love The Illiad, then you won't want to miss this creative take on the classic.

"An important, powerful, memorable book that invites us to look differently not only at The Iliad but at our own ways of telling stories about the past and the present." - Emily Wilson, translator of The Odyssey

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

Known for his relationship with his brother John Green and their YouTube videos, Hank Green has an avid fanbase that greeted his new novel with the utmost enthusiasm. His novel tells the story of April, a 23-year-old girl who stumbles across a mysterious sculpture and accidentally becomes the center of a worldwide investigation into the strange item's appearance. Intriguing and original, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing certainly deserves all of the hype it has received over the internet.

“[Green] applies wit, affection, and cultural intelligence to a comic sci-fi novel... A fun, contemporary adventure that cares about who we are as humans, especially when faced with remarkable events.” - Kirkus Reviews starred review

The Storyteller's Secret by Sejal Badani

When Jaya, a New York journalist, suffers a third miscarriage and her relationship with her husband begins to nravel, she decides to travel to the home of her ancestors: India. There, she becomes drunk on the sights, smells and sounds of the culture she came from. As she explores, she also begins to learn about her grandmother's past and how courageous she was in the face of adversity. Romantic and powerful, this is a book anyone can appreciate on a deep level.

“While the narrative at times reflects the dark elements of human nature, the tone is hopeful and enriching. Badani builds imagery with a gentleness that is soothing to take in and threads together rich descriptions of the landscape that are transportive.” USA Today’s Happy Ever After

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

Eveyln Hardcastle will be murdered at 11:00 PM, every night, until Aiden Bishop and identify her killer. Every day he wakes up in the body of a different guest who might know the truth, but unraveling the secrets of Blackheath might be more difficult than it seems. If you're in the mood for an inventive murder mystery that will keep you on your toes, check out Turton's newest novel ASAP.

"Turton's debut is a brainy, action-filled sendup of the classic mystery." - Kirkus

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

Elizabeth has had a difficult life, and when she meets young Victor Frankenstein, she's on the verge of starving to death. He becomes her saving grace, and she is taken in by his family almost immediately. However, as the years pass, Elizabeth realizes that Victor hides darker secrets than most people know. Will her new life with the Frankensteins come at a price?

“In this clever retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, White neatly undercuts the original by making Victor’s narrative wildly unreliable... this character-driven novel with a healthy amount of gore should appeal to horror fans, too.” - Booklist
