Lake Ridge, a SouthStar Community located in Cedar Hill,  announced today it is the official sponsor of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter, exhibit at the African American Museum at Fair Park, honoring the chapter’s  85th anniversary in 2014.  The exhibit premiered June 6 and will run until August 31.

“We are thrilled to be part of this celebration and to showcase the sorority as they’ve impacted so many lives in the last 85 years,” said Thad Rutherford, COO of SouthStar Communities.  “There are so many wonderful stories of empowerment and inspiration, and we are proud to be involved in a way that shines a larger spotlight on their work.”

The North Texas Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter was established in Dallas on June 6.  Mrs. Florence Harllee Phelps, a Howard University graduate, initiated the effort to establish a chapter in her hometown of the first Greek letter sorority for African American women.

“We are so thankful to Lake Ridge for sponsoring this exhibit which will inform our community about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and help us deliver an even greater service to needy Dallas residents,” said Kim McCree, President of Alpha Xi Omega Chapter.   “This group of exceptionally talented, college-educated African American women is committed to serving humankind and improving the quality of life for all. The exhibit at the African American Museum is a perfect venue to highlight our cause.”

The African American Museum is an institution dedicated to the research, identification, selection, acquisition, presentation and preservation of visual art forms and historical documents that relate to the African American Community. The collections of the Museum combined with its related activities will serve to assist all people to understand the African-American experience with emphasis on Dallas and the Southwestern United States.

Nestled among rolling hills reminiscent of the Texas Hill Country, Lake Ridge at Joe Pool Lake offers a unique landscape unlike any other in DFW with panoramic lake and skyline views. The community features gated and non-gated neighborhoods with spacious half to 1+ acre wooded and lake view homesites. Residents enjoy the benefits of the neighboring Tangle Ridge Golf Club, Lynn Creek Marina and over 200 acres of community parks, walking trails and fishing ponds. Centrally located just 20 minutes from Downtown Dallas and 28 miles from Downtown Fort Worth, residents in Lake Ridge are within a short commute to the attractions of both Metroplex downtowns.
